Investing under uncertainty

The acceleration of various types of change that we have long been observing has compelled us to heed even the most seemingly improbable extreme scenarios. Firstly, we have seen a turning point in monetary and fiscal policies, after a period of low inflation, low interest rates, and rising government spending. Secondly, in response to a new reality based on climate change and national security issues, more extreme governments interventions have become likely. Thirdly, financial markets are grappling with a new battle between values, forcing investors to pay attention to human motivations beyond reason or desire. Values like sovereignty and sustainability, for instance, are taking priority over economic rationality. Lastly, a new world order is taking shape, causing a desynchronization between the developments in Western countries and emerging countries across the globe. Increasingly, emerging countries are shaping their own destiny by building new political, economic and financial architectures. Given the acceleration of these four patterns of change, we must take extreme scenarios seriously and adjust our investment strategies accordingly.
The only certainty in life is change. It is our ability to navigate uncertainty that allows us to take calculated risks and manage wealth for future generations.
